13 Ağustos 2014, 01:24

European Championships first day ended with a different style. German big guy Storl defended his shot put title while 40-years old British distance runner Jo Pavey entitled 'oldest female champion ever' in Euro Champs.

Storl wins again European Championships in Athletics begun in two big rivals gold medals. Germans applaused their big boy David Storl, followed by British winning moment by experienced Joanne Pavey. Two different character, two different story in the end.

First final of Zurich 2014 dominated by youngest World champion David Storl. He was the main favorite to winning shot put and he proved that very first attempt. After his opening 21.41m, Storl tried more, but failed to progression. Storl as The Shot Put Devil named in his own twitter account,  won the competition by far, his followers sticked on 20.50-21.00 metres cycle. Spanish Borja Vivas, progressed his PB over 21 metres this year, found 20.86m in his journey to silver medal and surpassed Olympic champion Thomas Majewski. Renowned figure of shot putting, Majewski couldnt go beyond 20.83m, but that attempt still enough to his second Euro medal after 2010 gold.

10000 metres women race was very unusual in Letzigrund Stadion. 26 runner started the final, when 18 laps completed, 16 of them still in first group leadership contention. The beginning pace of that final was around 80 secs and have no progression until last several laps. Just before the final lap, Portuguese Sara Moreira led-up the group and accelerate little bit, but British runner Joanne Pavey reacted quickly. She gains leadership in final lap ahead of Clemence Calvin of France and turn to final stretch as same place. Euro Cup winner Calvin pushed her but didnt catch.

40-years old Pavey got the gold after slowest winner finish at Euro Champs 10000 metres women's when she clocked 32:22.39, while French team doubled on the podium, Clemence Calvin and Laila Traby finished back-to-back.

European Championships second day will feature both 100 metres final. Also some highly anticipated finals like 10000 metres men, discus men, long jump women will take place in evening session. / Şevket F. Erbay - Zurich
